Went back to the supermarket today, prepared to do battle. Bought some long life milk off the shelf a few days ago, opened it and found it had turned sour. On examination, found the use by date was 2nd Jan. Didn;t have my receipt or anything. Well, they refunded the money without any word. Suggested they should check the shelves more often. I think several people before me must have experienced similar.

Well . Either you are lucky of South Australia Supermarkets are a different breed . London ones would just laugh unless you had a receipt.
In the one we use ( 20 or 25 pay desks so it is quite big) a dear sweet old lady gave me advice on not packing soap in same bag as edibles ;then asked if I woud like cash back.I ha dnot intended to but said OK .
Back home I realised she had taken my plastic but not given me the cash ( which was debited on my bill)
Phoned the supermarket, quoted the till number and they said they would ceck.
Supermarket then said that that till′s float did not show an excess and so they could not help.
Another family memeber who was with me confirmed that I had not been given the cash .
Wrote it off to experience
Two weeks later same old lady at desk 18 or whatever . I asked for £10 cash back .
Card was processed .... long pause ... then across came the £10 .
It happened a third time .
I am pretty sure she was an expert at it and the supemarekt continued to employ her for another year or so. I am pretty sure there must have been other complaints .

It wasn′t the value of the transaction ($2+) but the inconvenience. I keep long life milk as a back up. Have been caught like you Jura. Presented a $50 note and was given change from $10. It always goes their way.

Yup.
My first (almost ) lesson in dishonesty was as a BoyScout on our very first expedition to London (en route to Switzerland) I had to buy a ticket on the Undeground (Metro to you others) .
I Proffered a £1 note ( quite a lot in those days )
The ticket came out and so did the change .. for 10/-
(Ten shillings )
I luckily I had heard of the dodge of giving change for a smaller note and just waited .The tenbob note followed after a slight pause .
I worked out that the guichet man had only to pull that two or three times an hour to make a lot extra.

Jura.. what is the fog like over there? I mean.. everytime we have fog I think of London.. Yesterday we had the WORST fog I have EVER seen.. We had a nice snowstorm a few days ago.. got 8 inches of snow.. now the low overnight was 55F. So all that warm air over snowpack caused unbelievable fog.. We had some really horrible car crashes.. one about 8 miles from me... multiple pile up into a train crossing a highway.. I never realize how scarey fog is.. I was scared to pick up Ian from school. BTW.. I went eagle watching last weekend.. spotted a mating pair!

Autumn, Fog /smog .Before the clean air act London really could have pea-soupers (and Glasgow too
Oone many years ago I tried to drive from Kingston to a Central London railway statin when there was thick (smoky) fog .At a roundabout a few hndred yards from where I was living I went round and round and enced up in someone′s front drive . A thirty minute drive took 2 hours .
In Glasgow when I was a boy I have seen bus conductors walking in front of the bus to show the driver the way .It was horrific .
That has all gone now although in Winter when we have a temperature inversion there can be early monring fog that slows the traffic down. usually lifts by about 10 am . The really cold fogs that lasted all day seem a thing of the past too.
The Winter here is the mildest on record .Spring blossom out far too early .
There has been bad snow in the North of England (Bowes Moor ) for a day or so although nothing down South at all.
Yes.Fog is scary .Once when I was about 25 I drove from Newmarket to Manchester and then on to Scotland .
In heavy fog I trailed behind an army truck for what seemed like 2 hours ( at 5 mph of maybe 10)
My eyes were out on stalks by the end of it .
Those days have gone
