Summer in London ?
Well until a few days ago there did not seem to be a summer here .

Now we have it in the 80 s F.

London like this is not quite as idyllic as the Swedish lakes .(Or even the Highlands )

Tourists not just in dozens or even hundreds . I walked from Victoria to the head of St James′s Park today and the crowds outside Buckingham Palace were quite astounding.
At first I thought that it must be some special occasion like trooping the colour but as far as I can tell it was simply for the usual changing of the guard.
It was impossible to walk along the pavement and I had to double back through the park to escape and finally get up to Green Park which was just as bad.

All very good natured although the teenagers look bored out of their minds .

The kiosks selling ice cream and Coca Cola must make a fortune

I wonder if Callas was unique in singing with so strong ideation...and I wonder if it made people think that naturalism in operatic acting should be the norm or if this idea has come from film culture. I do not believe in naturalistic acting or gesture on stage because (hopefully) the music conveys emotion and ideation that is more subtle than and different from our everyday common ways of doing things...the gestures, mimics (and words) must be able to convey such subtle feelings and therefore gestures which may seem unnatural might need to be used at times. I believe Jessye Norman is a singer who does this.

London is the embodiment of peace compared to Kolkata though! How big is the population?

Be careful Marger...idol worship can turn you into a warrior ;)

(I′ve posted it before...but just as an example of the gesture, look at her eyes and hands at the time of the violin solo)

That is very impressive Mira .As you say , the gestures and expression are very smooth .
That is a Swedish Production ?

Population of London ? I dunno . Too great , way too great . Depends where you draw the boundary for these megalopolis cities.
All I really know is that the whole damn lot try to get onto a Central Line Metro just as want to use it.

Kolkata, near the Bangladesh Border .Is it where you were or in the news . (If the latter I have mnissed the item)

"Beim Schlafengehen"

"Now I am wearied of the day;
all my ardent desires shall
gladly succumb to the starry night
like a sleepy child.

Hands, stop all your work;
brow, forget all your thoughts;
all my being now
yearns to sink into sleep.
And my unguided spirit
wishes to fly up freely
into night′s magic sphere
to live deeply and thousandfold.

Mira ,I used to sing this in English and now I can′t find a decent translation anywhere.
They keep calling rings (betrothal rings ) ringlets
"Joseph von Eichendorff :
In einem kühlen Grunde
(Das zerbrochene Ringlein)

In einem kühlen Grunde
da geht ein Mühlenrad,
mein Liebchen ist verschwunden,
das dort gewohnet hat.

Sie hat mir Treu versprochen,
gab mir ein Ring dabei,
sie hat die Treu gebrochen,
das Ringlein sprang entzwei.

Ich möcht als Spielmann reisen
weit in die Welt hinaus,
und singen meine Weisen
und gehn von Haus zu Haus.

Ich möcht als Reiter fliegen
wohl in die blut′ge Schlacht,
um stille Feuer liegen
im Feld in dunkler Nacht.

Hör’ ich das Mühlrad gehen,
ich weiß nicht, was ich will,
ich möcht am liebsten sterben,
da wär’s auf einmal still.

You used to sing this..? You mean a classical song?
Sang yesterday at the festival, it was a great success for the whole arrangement, a big church completely packed, people were even standing, lots of gay couples. There was a fantastic energy in the crowd, better than anything I have experienced. The conductor was such a funny and dedicated person, Jonathan Sheffer. He said he did two of the Batman movies

It is really annoying me because I can recall 75% of the words of the English arrangement .
The one or two translations that I can find are very poor and seem to be transliterations rather than translations

Mira , Delighted it went off well .I am no expert but I am pretty sure it is a demanding piece .

Re the Mill wheel .This is a song we were taught at school and must have been an English translation of the Gluck /Eichendorff Lieder .
What annoys me is that the words we were taught ran well while the translitrations that I can find are very poor .
I can recall about 3/4 but not all .

Having no language for numbers is no barrier to being able to count, according to a new study of Australian Aborigine children from remote communities.

The study of children from two groups in Australia′s Northern Territory found that, though the communities had no words or gestures for numbers above two, they were still able to copy and perform number-related tasks.

The findings, detailed in the U.S. journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, hint that humans possess an innate mechanism for counting..

She added that: "It′s possible that Aboriginal cultures have particularly advanced visuo-spatial cognition which they can use to represent up to nine items precisely. This would be a very interesting finding because the normal limit for such a capacity in Western cultures is three items.”

This seems to mean that although you and I cannot coineive of the number five without a word to represent that concept , aboriginal kids can .
That seems reasonable !
